Truckee’s original name was “Coburn’s Station” reflecting the town’s railroad origins. Residents renamed the town “Truckee” after a Paiute Indian chief in 1868. Truckee is known for its close proximity to the ill-fated Donner Party of the winter of 1846-47. Today, Truckee has a population of 13,800.
